Austin Public Library's 75th Jubilee Anniversary
The year 2001 marks Austin Public Library's 75th anniversary. Austin Public
Library staff and support groups are currently meeting to discuss how to
best celebrate. We plan to issue a new Jubilee adult library card in honor
of the anniversary. A design contest will be announced soon. Some of the
other ideas include:
- Youth Parade & Festival
- Traveling exhibit of old Austin Public Library photos
- Oral Histories
- T-shirts, bookmarks, banners, etc.
If you have ideas about how we should celebrate the library's 75th
anniversary, please let Brenda Branch know at 499-7444.
TexShare
The TexShare Card program sponsored by the Texas State Library provides the
customers of the Austin Public Library the opportunity to borrow materials directly from the participating TexShare libraries throughout the State of Texas. In turn, the Austin Public Library would extend free reciprocal
borrowing privileges to customers in good standing from other Texas
libraries. Registered users must obtain a TexShare Card from their home institution before they are able to check out materials from other
participating libraries.
Austin cardholders in good standing are issued a TexShare card by the Austin Public Library which is honored at 163+ participating libraries in Texas.
Currently, the participating libraries in the Austin metropolitan area include: Austin Community College, Concordia University, Huston-Tillotson, St. Edwards University, SWT-San Marcos and the University of Texas at Austin.
The Austin Public Library will extend free borrowing privileges at the main
and branch libraries to the customers of participating public and academic
libraries who have been issued TexShare cards by their home library. These
guest customers will have access to the collections of the main and branch
libraries. TexShare cards are valid for no longer than one year from date of issuance by the home library. The Austin Public Library will require a valid
TexShare card from guest customers before extending lending privileges.
NetLibrary E-Book Program:
3 New Electronic Library Services
On July 1, 2000, the Austin Public Library launched its NetLibrary E-Book
Program For six months beginning July 1st, the library will have access to
1,500 E-book titles such as the Complete Idiot's guides; the Chicken Soup
series; computer user guides; reference handbooks; Cliff Notes; AMACOM,
American Management Association books, and many others.
Titles will be listed in the catalog. Austin Public Library customers must
first sign up for the NetLibrary program by using a computer terminal at a library location. Once the registration is complete, E-books can be accessed form any Internet-connected computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week
through its web site.
To protect publishers' copyrights, only one customer at a time can have
access to each Austin Public Library copy of an E-book. However, the "book"
can be reserved for a customer's exclusive use (i.e., checked out to that
customer) for 24 hours.
NetLibrary software allows customers to conduct full-text searched in the available titles. NetLibrary will provide training for library representatives in the initial stage of the trial period.
RefLink
The Austin Public Library RefLink electronic reference service allows anyone
with access to a customer and an e-mail account to request information from
the John Henry Faulk Central Library's professional reference staff. The new
reference service, available through the library's web site at http://www.ci.autin.tx.us/library/reflink.htm is designed to provide answers to specific questions requiring short,
factual information. Questions can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, and answers will, in most cases, be e-mailed within 24 hours.
For questions limited to Austin and Travis County information, the library's
Austin History Center offers its own e-mail reference service link at
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/library/lbahcers.htm.
