President's Message
The big sale is over. I hope everyone has recovered - physically and
financially (I know that the volunteers are some of our best customers). I
got caught up in the auction on Saturday No, I did not pay $350.00 for the
book set of North American Indians. I did obtain three of the four books I
bid on. It was a lot of fun, if costly. The big item was the sale itself.
Many favorable comments were heard about how smooth everything went and the
new venue. We took in $49,000.00 - down from the past two years but still a
respectable sum. I'm sure Brenda and her bunch will find ways to put it to
good use. Special credit needs to go to Connie Moore, our volunteer
coordinator. She rounded up over 120 enthusiastic people to help put the
sale on. All those young people coming in at closing on Sunday to help with
the cleanup and boxing of the remaining books were a God-send to our tired
group of stalwart help. REMAR, the folks who moved the books over to the
Crockett Center from the library worked a miracle. Starting Thursday
morning, everything was moved out of the basement and at the Crockett Center
by 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. The most efficient move-in ever. The folks at
the Crockett Center were most helpful, especially Maggie Prehoda, the center
manager, (she drives a mean fork lift). They had everything ready for us to
start work on Friday morning and even came in early on Sunday to open up so
we could broadcast on the Channel 8 News at 8:00 AM. David Capshaw and
Quentin Fennessy performed yeomen service as bag men collecting, counting,
depositing all the loot from the sale (Ed, it took two people to fill in for
you). A big thank you also goes out to Brenda Branch and all the folks at
the library who volunteered their time and provided us with book carts and a
pallet jack to ease the movement of books. Who was that lady with the goose
and the purple critter following her?
Have a Great Holiday Season!
