From the Volunteer Office
The Austin Public Library recognized volunteer benchmarks at our annual
Recognition Party on February 4, 2000. During 1999, the Austin Public
Library volunteers once again broke their own record when 347 volunteers
contributed 12,538.75 hours... a 5% increase over last year!
What did they do with all those hours? They shelved books, sorted books,
installed security strips, made puppets, performed puppet shows, stuffed
envelopes, constructed archival boxes, copied biography files, inventoried
City records, answered phones, distributed flyers, read to kids, taught
Internet classes, cleaned books... and that is just a start.
Among the Friends, Jo Overton was recognized for 2,500 hours, although rumor
has it she probably has done more! She and husband Jack are regulars in the
basement and she helps out at a branch location. By the way, 'Saint
Josephine' also volunteers for the Dripping Springs Community Library.
Other Friends also celebrated benchmarks this year. Connie Moore's record
indicates 750 hours, but I suspect that is about one third of her actual
hours! And Jackie Daniel has logged 100 hours between the Friends and
Central Texas Library System.
Special recognition went to the Friends of APL "Basement Crew" which
includes Nena Bentley, Connie Moore, Jackie Daniels, Avis Davis, Arnie
Henkel, Ken LaRonde, Bob Merrifield, Mary Morgan, Clarice Neal, Mary Nichol,
Sam Nicholson, Mary Ogle, Bob and Virginia Oram, Jack and Jo Overton, Earle
and Idalene Ross, Ericka Steinbaugh, Phyllis Todaro, Grace Turner, Lillian
and Merritt Voss, and Bob Zamen.
Many thanks to all these folks, and all the volunteers who give so
generously of their time and talents! Want to join them? Give me a call at
(512) 499-7443.
