The basement crews (Tuesday and Saturday mornings) are back in full swing. Our helpful volunteer coordinator, Ann Stafford, gave an in-service each of the mornings to acquaint the volunteers with some guidelines aimed at more effective and efficient processing of the printed material to be packed for the 2000 Monster Book Sale. More on THIS particular event is covered in this newsletter by our own Friends' President, Ken LaRonde. Some of the upgrade in procedures involved care in choosing size of pallets used so that they will fit into the elevator when loaded with boxes of books! We also have stickers to identify boxes for the upcoming book sale printed with and unmistakable "2000." Barry Miller from Central Library works with withdrawn printed material and donations to the branches. He is going to assist us by formulating criteria the branches (and we) can use to discard or otherwise reject donated materials unsuitable for the book sale. Materials that have been stored in garages or basements are subject to climatic changes, molds, and infestations. Rejecting these before they are brought into the basement will relieve all concerned from having to discard them after transport.
We had a full, jolly crew on January 4th, and enjoyed Bob Merrifield (usually a Saturday worker) joining us. The basement is a great place to be even when you can get to the golf course! But we really DO have room for more volunteers. As one of my taskmasters in days long ago used to say, "Many hands make light work." Besides, everyone is tired of hearing my stale jokes and we could definitely use some new stories and memories.
The new tote bags seem to have charmed Library patrons: as of January 8th, there have been a total of 396 bags sold through the branch libraries and Central. We haven't been able to determine how many were sold at the Book Sale itself, but from the number left Sunday evening, it was about 40-50. So we do have tote bags still available for those who unfortunately didn't get one for Christmas. The bags are roomy enough to hold a nice box of chocolates, a can of home-made cookies, and/or a romantic book for someone special on Valentine's Day...or a whole nest of candy eggs on Easter!
So, members of FAPL, if you've been mulling over exactly what new and exciting activity you can get into for the new millennium, give thought to checking out a 2-hour-a-week stint in the basement at Central Library. Good company, good books, good eats…you'll be in good hands!
