From the Basement

From the Basement

Truly, it IS summer; we welcomed our first young people participating in the Summer Youth Volunteer Program on May 29th. Stephanie Yip, Angela Chen, and Jacqueline Chen came down to the basement very willing and definitely able! With brief instructions on processing books and sorting the "valuables" from the boxes, those three young ladies went through about a dozen! Marilyn LaRonde was a great help in monitoring the discards, and as designated supervisor, I kept shelving all the readied material. We are grateful for the energy and enthusiasm of our young volunteers and glad they came back the next week and the next!! Guess we didn't scare them off with all our chatter and the volume of work.

A new adult volunteer also joined us, braving the 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. heat to start up a new group. Helen Spear is a delightful, easygoing lady who jumped right into "doing things correctly" and hopefully she, also, will return another Tuesday. Since yours truly had to get to the Board meeting at 11:30, Marilyn LaRonde had the pleasure of indoctrinating Helen. Ken DOES KNOW, but I shall take this opportunity to emphatically remind him, that his good wife is one of our real treasures in the basement. And a pleasant person to work along side. I must say, we are a truly blessed group down in the basement!

As of June 5th, we have processed an additional 231 cartons of books, bringing our total number of boxes ready for the Monster Book Sale to 1325. I didn't get around to counting up Ken's Special Books boxes, but it seems we will have a sufficient offering to once again fill the tables at the Crockett Center. One thing that has really boosted our supply has been the number of donations received from members of the community. Although we cannot use everything for the sale due to the condition of some of the materials, we have ways of "recycling" those books we don't keep. We've had to shuffle around for space in the basement to set up space for KAY'S KORNER which benefits the Cerebral Palsy Association in San Antonio and the Rotarians who send books to a settlement in Africa. A school down in the Valley has asked for help in setting up a local library and now that's in the works. We ARE in the business of spreading literacy and good will!!

The next newsletter will be after the SALE, so till then - have a delightful summer and DO REMEMBER that we NEED YOU AND YOU AND YOU to make the Sale a success.
