Creating a Website for Your Organization
MAIN volunteers will create a web site for your organization if you do not have a person or persons in house that know how. We do ask that every organization commit to developing in house capability over time. MAIN plans to assist organization with training programs and will be announcing them sometime in the future.
What are the steps in getting a web site published on MAIN?Your initial contact should be with Nathan Jensen. He will determine if your organization is qualified to publish on MAIN and answer any general questions you may have. To let Nathan know you are interested in publishing at MAIN use this Form. At the top of the form you will be given four options. Select the first one.
Your next step is to assemble the documents you want published. We suggest you start off with something simple like your organization's standard brochure information. Once you have that in place, MAIN will work with you in exploring other possibilities.
MAIN needs your information in electronic format. Diskettes are fine, but Email is possible. If your information includes graphics, diskettes are best. We can work with most formats, but prefer either Microsoft Word or ASCII text. We can take both Windows and MAC formats, but prefer Windows.
To make it easier for us to take your content and turn it into web pages we'd like to make sure it is formatted in a specific way. Basically we want all formatting removed. Formatting is most of what we do in generating a web document. If it comes to us formatted, we just have to strip it out. Here are some things you can do to help us:
- Font
- Courier (or ASCII text)- Tabs - none
- Paragraph Indents - none
- Columns - none
- File Names - no more than eight characters (12345678.htm)
- Graphics - .gif or .jpg format only
Some other things we'd like you to do:
- Save each separate document in your collection with a unique file name.
- Define all acronyms in your text.
- Provide contact information on your opening page: mailing address, phone number, fax number, and, optionally, an email contact address.
- We do not have a scanner. If you need a graphic scanned, use Kinkos or a similar commercial service and have the graphic scanned into a .gif, or .jpg format.
Once you have your content assembled, arrange to send it to us on disk, or by Email. You should always contact us and make the arrangement first. Please do not send your materials before talking to the individual that will receive them. Work with that person on how he/she is to receive your content.
Red Wassenich will let you know who at MAIN is going to develop your web pages.
Once your content is turned into web pages it will be published on MAIN. Your organization will have a unique URL (web address). You do have some say in what that address will be. This is how it works:
Your URL (web address) will be:
http://www.main.org/directory name/
Example: www.main.org/boyscouts
You can request a directory name.
If the directory name you request is not in use already, we will usually let you use it.Once we have your site running on MAIN, you will be notified by the Email address you provide.
MAIN Web Raising Events
About once every quarter, MAIN holds a Web Raising event. Experienced web developers volunteer a Saturday to meet in a room full of computers and develop web sites for organizations that need help. We announce our Web Raising events from the "News and Announcements" option on our home page., and on our electronic mail forum MAINLINE.
