1. Paola called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.
2. Dr. Emilio Zamora spoke regarding several issues about Mexican-American
history. These included a historical evaluation of its place in twentieth-century
history and the growing importance that the Latino community will have as
it increases in demographic terms. His own work at the School of Information,
UT Austin, includes teaching about the archival sources available in South
Texas and northern Mexico. He takes students on field trips to these sources.
He is presently involved in gaining support for an oral history project to
include Hispanics who have served as representatives to the Texas legislature.
He looks forward to partnering with libraries to preserve and maintain materials
of and about the Texas Latino community.
3. Minutes for 17 September 2004 meeting approved as presented by Adán.
4. Gustavo reported the treasury balance and encouraged members to renew their
memberships promptly.
Old Business
5. Paola gave an update on the final meeting of the Hoyos -
Holes discussion group which met in October.
6. Paola gave an update on the Quilt Project noting its continuing success
at several libraries.
7. Margo gave an update on creating annotated booklists appropriate for k-2
and k-3 on bilingual, Spanish, or English works with Latino themes. The contributors
are Margo, Sarah, Josefina, and Paola.
8. Jennifer gave an update of new member's packets. Since the quotes were
very high for professional printing, it was decided that packets would be
made by Jennifer, supplies paid by the chapter, and some copying to be provided
by APL.
9. Margo reported on possible speakers for the year, these to include a representative
from LANIC and Jill Goldman who spent the summer as an intern in Oaxaca, Mexico.
10. Paola gave an update on the Día de los muertos event that was held
at Cepeda Branch.
11. Jennifer noted the differences between the national membership form and
our own and the resulting confusion about where to send the form by new members
as well as by those who are renewing. All membership forms should be sent
to the Treasurer of the local chapter who then forwards them to the national
office.
12. Paola gave an update on the tamales fund-raiser.
13. There were no Additional Discussion Points and Announcements.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Adán Benavides, 24 July 2004. Approved as amended.
