This page talks about things you can do to improve your web site's indexing with MAIN's and other search engines.

It is a good idea to search for your pages on MAIN, so you can see how they are represented. The titles (clickable text) returned in the search results are taken from the title tag on the (your) page. Title tags are the most important component in getting indexed by any search engine, including the big ones like Alta Vista and Excite. They are also what displays when someone creates a book mark to your page. For these reasons, you want to make sure your title tags are descriptive of the content on your page. It is also a good idea to incorporate your web site's main title in the tag. See below an example of how MAIN does it. This is the title tag for the page you are viewing now:

For more information on optimizing your web pages for search engines, see the following resource: A Webmaster's Guide to Search Engines

NOTE: We have registered MAIN with all of the popular search engines. So your web site should get indexed by them as part of their indexing of MAIN. How it gets indexed is driven by your use of the title tag and meta tags. The above referenced "Webmaster's Guide to Search Engines" offers detaild information on the use of meta tags.
