42nd Annual Homecoming & Reunion

Saturday May 25, 2002

  • The Flag Ceremony began at 11:30 A.M.
About 97 folks attended the flag ceremony this year. The events of 9/11 caused this year's flag ceremony to be particularly meaningful. Glynda Noland (daughter of Murray Williams) read a poem by Helen Steiner Rice titled "A Memorial Day Prayer". The name of each veteran buried at the Mahomet Cemetery was then read.

  • Family members and friends placed an American flag on each veteran's grave. Our thanks to each volunteer who donated their time and effort to clean, cut and trim the cemetery. It looked very manicured this year.
  • A Barbecue meal was provided at 12:30 P.M. Special thanks to those who provided the many wonderful desserts.
  • The business meeting was held after lunch. Eldon Williams, President of the Mahomet Cemetery Association conducted the meeting. Bennie Clark, Secretary/Treasurer read last year's business meeting minutes and presented the financial statement. The terms for two of the directors expired this year. Robert Noland was elected for a second term and Dennis Rea for his first term. Barbara Drosche (daughter of Gordon Williams) will serve as the new Secretary/Treasurer.
  • Other News:
A storm with high winds hit the area Sunday night (May 26th) removing some of the roof on the pavilion at the cemetery. Thanks to Eldon Williams, Dennis Rea and Wayne Drosche who saw the damage and took action to promptly replace the roof. In the midst of a bunch of nailing, one of them was overheard saying "so this is what it means to be on the board".

  • Donations to the Mahomet Cemetery Association for the maintenance and preservation of the cemetery are always appreciated.
