Austin ARS -- Recorder Players and Friends

See the latest news about the Austin Chapter's current events and plans! Recorder and percussion workshops with Nina Stern and Mauricio Molina on Sunday, May 4 were a great success! Then on Monday, May 5, Nina and Mauricio gave a concert "Flutes and Drums Around the World"!

We're on break for the summer, but take a look at the meeting dates for next season! A highlight will be the meeting in late February 2009 (we'll call that our "March" meeting), when we are joined by Board members of the national ARS organization. Austin is hosting their semi-annual Board meeting, and they'll be at our chapter meeting as well as some other mingling/meal event -- plans are in the works!

Mission of the chapter

The mission of the American Recorder Society is to promote the recorder and its music by:

Developing resources and standards to help people of all ages and ability levels to play and study the recorder

Presenting the instrument to new constituencies

Encouraging increased career opportunities for professional recorder performers and teachers

Enabling and supporting recorder playing as a shared social experience.

Regular meetings

We meet September through May, on the second Friday of each month (unless announced otherwise). The meeting begins at 7:30 pm with a short (20-25 minutes) musical program usually presented by chapter members. Announcements and any business follows, and the remainder of the meeting is spent in large-group playing led by the Music Director. We always finish by 9:30pm.

The monthly meetings take place at the Austin Mennonite Church, 5801 Westminster Drive, here in Austin. Here's a closeup satellite map to show you exactly where the most convenient parking is.

All lovers of early music are invited to attend, either to play or just to listen.

Group playing usually involves several types of instruments (several members also play viol), so please feel free to bring any early instruments you may happen to have. Important note: please bring your own music stand, too!
