About The Organization
Mission
Access Austin Arts is dedicated to reducing barriers between the cultural arts and people with disabilities.
Philosophy
Access Austin Arts believes that the cultural arts should be
accessible to all members of our community regardless of disability or ability. We are
committed to approaching access to the cultural arts with the utmost artistic integrity
and excellence in all of our programs, projects, and services. We are committed to
training audio describers as artists so that blind or visually impaired audience members
share an experience equal to other audience members. We support hiring professional and
certified sign language interpreters skilled in the specialized area of theatrical
interpreting so that the deaf audience receives the same quality of experiences as other
audience members. We support professionalism in all approaches to access for people with
disabilities. We offer technical assistance, support, and resources to arts organizations
and individual artists who are attempting to comply with the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and
the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Funding
Access Austin Arts is funded in part by the City of Austin Arts Commission, NationsBank, the Pearle Vision Foundation, the Austin Council of the Blind, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Texas Commission for the Blind, and individual donors.
