AIR-Austin is an award-winning event whose mission is to make the Internet accessible for people with disabilities. Web designers are matched with a nonprofit organization to build a web site to serve the organization's mission. Last year, more than 100 people teamed up and built 20 accessible web sites during an 8-hour competition. The result: countless people with disabilities experienced greater access to the Internet as a tool for gaining knowledge, economic power and exploring job opportunities. AIR-Austin is organized by Knowbility, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, & MAIN with support from the Virtual Volunteering Project.

Biplane Event Schedule

Attendance is required on the following dates:

Qualifying Laps Hands on training in basic uses of a web site to serve your mission. Saturday, September 23, from 9am to noon.

Start Your Engines BIG Party! Web design teams find out which nonprofit group they will design for amidst food, drink and great music! Thursday, October 12th at 6 p.m.

Gather Speed Teams meet to talk about the site and gather necessary background information: Friday, October 13

The Race is ON! Rally: Saturday. October 14, 2000 at Infotec from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Winner's Circle Winners will be announced at Port Austin Expo

Racecar Race Divisions

Stock Car: Hosted on the MAIN Web Site (http://www.main.org/) MAIN will provide hosting for free, but with technological restrictions: no "whizbang" technology, no advanced interndet/Web features/functionality/CGI scripting, no IPng/HTML9x, no Java/JavaScript, ASP, VBxx, VC++, etc. just straightforward html presentation and URL/email links. MAIN provides public access to community inofrmation and aims to make all content accessible to the broades number of people of all different abilities, and to those with the barest minimum of computing technology available to them.

Formula 1: Anything (technology wise) goes. Full-blown Sun/Solaris hemi-engine, custom CGI carburetor, SGI, IBM/AIX, OS/2, Macintosh, UNIX, You Name It! The catch is: You design it, you host it, you support it! MAIN can't, and MAIN won't! The WEb Design Team must provide an end-to-end, total life-cycle funding and technology plan for hosting, connectivity, access, maintenance, User support, etc. Obviously, big companies have an advantage in this category, but obviously also, participation in this category requires a major commitment.
